About the FDP: The FDP was conducted to enable candidates to secure, avoid , and control threats. This workshop was useful as this is a very much needed area to be discussed. Hence we thank the management for conducting the FDP and for allowing four of our faculty members to attend the FDP. I also thank the Head, Department CSE and IT, ICTACT for organizing valuable FDP.

There were 16 participants from various colleges in Tamil Nadu. The trainer was Mr. Saravanan Rajagopal from PALOALTO Network Company in USA.

The inauguration of the FDP on ‘Firewall Installation and Configuration’ was done by Dr. G. Senthilkumar, the secretary DCE, Mr. Arul, the HoD of IT, DCE, Mr. Saravanan, DGM, ICTACT and Mr. Hariharan, Sales Executive, ICTACT.

Day 1: Initially the trainer discussed the basic overview of the 5 day course, and the topics to be covered in the FDP, which were
Platform and architecture of Paloalto Firewall.
Two plane architecture:
1. Data Plane
2. Control Plane

Compare Paloalto Firewall with other firewall.
In the lab session, there were hands on training in Virtual Firewall.

Day 1 was very useful to know about the firewall basics and everyone gained practical knowledge about the firewall.

Day 2: The day started with recap of DAY 1. Then the trainer started with lab session, to work on basic configuration about the firewall.
Worked with 7 main tabs in firewall:
  • Dashboard
  • ACC
  • Monitor
  • Policies
  • Objects
  • Network
  • Devices
Later, the trainer discussed the evolution of firewall and the participants learnt about Dashboard Acc Monitor tab

Day 2 was informative and the participants gained practical knowledge.

Day 3: The day started with recap of Day 2.

The trainer taught Network and device tab. In lab session he taught the participants to design Basic Network using Switch and Router, then to implement the same design in the Firewall. That was followed by Zone and Virtual Network.

Later, the participants learnt how to NAT (Network Address Translation) in the Networking Day 3 was useful to learn about Networking and Design tab in Firewall.

Day 4: The day started with a recap session on previous classes.

Day 4 was about Policies and Objects Tab. The trainer taught us how to create App Id and Content Id in PALOALTO firewall and how to prepare security policies for authentication purpose.

Vulnerability and URL filtering, Antivirus, Spyware, and effective methods of blocking virus using policies were discussed.

Day 5: The day started with recap of previous session.
The topics covered in the last day of the FDP were User ID and SSL Decryption.
He discussed how to create the user ID and session ID for providing privileges to authenticated user.
Dr. S.Sivasubramaniam, Head, Department of CSE thanked the trainer, organizer and the participants for the smooth conduct of the FDP.
Mr.P.Vijayaragavan, Associate Professor, Department of CSE gave vote of thanks for all the organizing committee members in the programme.
